Today, it has become analogous with Indian classical music along with the omnipresent Sitar. Things you should watch out for in a Sarod are the wood used, the background of the maker, and the type of instrument. Always choose the traditional design rather than one of those "Beatles-inspired" designs that are hawked for $1600 on ebay. On the other hand, amateur-grade "souveneir" sarods that cost about $250 can put you off the instrument very quickly with their extremely poor acoustics. We focus on this very affordable concert-grade traditional teak sarod because we believe it to be the best choice for the serious as well as the aspiring musician. This unit comes with full tuning and stringing instructions and a set of 2 CDs representing the various gharanas of the Sarod. These CDs include Amjad Ali Khan, of course, also a semi-classical CD that exemplifies the tremendous versatality of this instrument for virtuosos of stringed instruments. This is a beautifully hand-crafted Calcutta Tarafdar instrument, and comes with a custom-made padded sarod case for easy handling and extra safety.Fiberglass case option is also available at cost. Made from seasoned teak, the sarod features a goatskin surface, a low-maintenance brass tumba - or resonator, and steel strings altogether that can be strummed to evoke mystical hymns and a deep post-orgasmic emotionality. Four of the strings are melody or playing strings; three are rhythm strings, and the rest are sympathetic and jawari strings. The aesthetics of this concert instrument are also very pleasing with beautiful handpainted meena crafsmanship and a machine-polished chrome-plated steel finger-board. Instead of the conventional fretboard, this metal plate helps in sliding the fingers faster and enables the musician to get a wonderfully deep gamak.
