VI HAR NORSK BANK! DU FÅR INGEN PROBLEMER MED TOLLEN I NORGE VED KJØP AV DENNE VARE! FRANK ZAPPA 'Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation' 2007 dokumentar DVD FORMAT: DVD STAND: NY, FORSEGLET UDGIVELSESÅR: 2007 OPRINDELSES-LAND: U.S.A.FORMAT: NTSC KODE DETALJER:This episode of the 'Classic Albums' television series appropriately combines consideration of two albums, 'Overnight Sensation', originally credited to the Mothers, and the Frank Zappa solo LP 'Apostrophe', which were sequential releases in the Zappa catalog in 1973 and 1974, and are the only two Zappa albums to have been certified gold. Of course, the best person to comment on the discs would be Zappa himself, but he was long dead when the program was undertaken; excerpts from an interview with him are included, however, along with extensive footage of him playing songs from the albums in concert and on TV. The bulk of the show is given over to interview footage with bandmembers who played on the albums or with Zappa at other times -- Napoleon Murphy Brock, Warren Cuccurullo, George Duke, Bruce Fowler, Ralph Humphrey, Elliot Ingber, Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, and Steve Vai -- and with family members including Zappa's wife Gail Zappa and his children Moon, Dweezil, and Ahmet Zappa. Also heard from are journalist David Fricke, Zappa tape archivist Joe Travers, engineers Kerry McNab and Frank Filipetti, Alice Cooper (who once recorded for a Zappa record label), and, oddly, actor Billy Bob Thornton (who does not appear to have any connection to Zappa beyond being a fan). The 50-minute documentary is long on appreciation and short on narrative, as various observers praise Zappa and comment on various aspects of his career and music. A staple of 'Classic Albums' is sequences in which somebody sits at a mixing board in a recording studio playing back a multi-track tape of the album in question and manipulating the faders to demonstrate what individual tracks sound like. In this case, that person is Dweezil Zappa, and he reveals the intricacy of the arrangements on the albums, bringing out, for instance, the background singing of Tina Turner & the Ikettes. Zappa fans will appreciate the program and gain many insights into some of his most popular music. The bonus material nearly doubles the running time and includes more with Dweezil Zappa at the mixing board; a live performance of "Montana" at the Roxy in Los Angeles; a TV performance of "I'm the Slime"; Dweezil Zappa's tribute band Zappa Plays Zappa playing "Camarillo Brillo"; an extended discussion of how Ruth Underwood's marimba was electrified for live performances; and an intriguing visit to the Zappa tape vault that suggests there are many posthumous releases yet to come. ~ Review by William Ruhlmann, RoviRun Time: 97 minutes ******************************************************** | ||||
